The year ended with girls on top in the United Kingdom, as Leona Lewis and Amy Winehouse respectively claimed the biggest-selling single and album of 2007.

According to chart compiler the Official U.K. Charts Co., Lewis' "Bleeding Love" (Syco/Sony BMG) single sold 788,000 sales in the 10 weeks following its October release, including a seven-week stint at No. 1. Winehouse's sophomore album for Island/Universal "Back to Black" sold 1.85m during 2007, including 265,000 copies of a new deluxe edition of the album.

The second-highest selling single of the year was Rhianna's "Umbrella" (Def Jam/Universal), with 512,000 copies. Lewis' "Spirit" (Syco) was the second-highest-selling album, with 1.59 million copies. However, Lewis' album can claim to be the biggest-selling new release of 2007; while "Back to Black" was released in November 2006, "Spirit" was issued one year later.

The performances of Lewis and Winehouse reflect a strong chart performance by British talent in 2007. Seven of the year's 10 biggest-selling albums and eight of the best-selling singles were by U.K. acts, according to the OCC.
