Independent distributor and label MapleMusic has scored its first No. 1 album in Canada with Radiohead's "In Rainbows" (ATO).

The album tops the current chart, dated Jan. 19. "We're thrilled to have our first ever number No. 1 record," says Grant Dexter, president of Toronto-based MapleMusic. "It's such a amazing achievement for an independent music company, and a defining moment in the growth of our business."

MapleMusic has had several Canadian chart successes in the past, most notably with the 2001 debut EP by Sam Roberts, "The Inhuman Condition," plus recent hits by Tegan and Sara and Silversun Pickups.

"In Rainbows" sold around 16,000 copies in its first week of sales, and an additional 1,000 copies the week previous after some retailers began selling the album prior to the official Jan. 1 release date.

The album was released through the ATO label in Canada, which struck a licensing deal with MapleMusic subsidiary Fontana North last year. MapleMusic is partially owned by Universal Music Canada, which invested in the business in 2002.
