Miel Vanattenhoven, radio producer and organizer of Belgium's Middelheim Jazz festival, passed away April 2 when he lost his battle against cancer. He was 63.

Vanattenhoven started his career in Belgian Flemish language public radio in the 1960s. In 1970, he was appointed producer with BRT 1 Radio, where was involved in the launch of Jazz Middelheim.

From 1991, Vanattenhoven headed the festival as coordinator, offering a stage to both established jazz acts and new artists.

In 2007, Vanattenhoven joined the VRT's culture department to launch a new radio jazz program hosted by piano player Jef Neve.
