Hungarian folk act Muzsikas will receive the 2008 WOMEX Award during this year's edition of of the world music event.

The veteran group will perform at the closing of the WOMEX awards ceremony on Nov. 2 in Seville. The global music event begins Oct. 29.

Muzsikas was formed in 1973 and has released 10 albums, the majority of them for Hannibal/Ryko. The group has toured around the world, including an appearance at London's Royal Albert Hall last month for the folk day of the prestigious BBC Proms. A U.S. tour has been booked in November through California-based Seldy Cramer Artists.

"It is the greatest honour that could happen to us this year to receive this special award from WOMEX," says band lead Daniel Hamar. "We never thought 35 years ago when we started playing and collecting traditional Hungarian folk music in Hungary and Transylvania that one day we would receive such a prestigious award."

The WOMEX Award is now in its 10 year. This year an additional award will be presented to the folk music department of the Sibelius Academy in
Helsinki.
