U.K.-based MP3 delivery service, 7Digital.com has reported a 241% increase in year-on-year sales from 2007 - 2008 at Cannes music trade event, Midem.

Comparative year-on-year figures for Q4 alone took the percentage growth to a massive 260%.

Although the company would not divulge actual sales figures, it confirmed that the number of registered users had surpassed 1.6 million.

Kings of Leon's "Only By the Night" (Hand Me Down/RCA) headed the top 10 best-selling albums, while Coldplay appeared twice with "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends" and Prospekt's March EP (Parlophone/EMI).

7Digital.com CEO, Ben Drury attributed the sales spike to a successful MP3 format conversion in September. "The transition to MP3 has really boosted digital album sales with high-quality MP3 consumers are more likely to purchase albums, rather than picking one or two tracks from an album," he said in a statement.

Drury also predicted the adoption of high quality, DRM-free music would soon push album revenue above single-track download revenue.

Upon conversion, 7Digital.com became the first online service in Europe to offer downloads from all four major labels in the MP3 format.

As a result, the company experienced strong growth in the European market and has decided to further expand into Belgium, Netherlands (pricing in Euros) and Switzerland (pricing in Swiss Francs).
