Sprint Nextel Corp said on Tuesday it would begin selling the long-awaited Palm Pre smartphone on June 6 for $199.99 with a two-year service agreement and after a $100 mail-in rebate.

The Pre will run on Sprint's 3G network and feature personal and professional calendars, e-mail, and contact lists, the company said.

The new phone is seen as Palm's best hope to fight rivals such as the iPhone and Research In Motion's BlackBerry, which have hurt Palm's smartphone sales in recent years.
