South African Afro-soul performer Lira tops the performers bill for the second MTV Africa Music Awards, taking place Oct. 10 at the Kasarani Indoor Stadium, Nairobi.

Lira, who was crowned female artist of the year at this year's South African Music Awards, will be joined by 2008 MTV Africa Music Awards best female winner Wahu.

Kenyan hip-hop/R&B artist Wahu earned a U.K. MOBO nomination as best African act in 2008 and is known for hits like "Sweet Love". Another MOBO alumni (winner of best African act in 2006) who joins the lineup is Ghanaian dancehall artist Samini. Nigerian rapper M.I. rounds off the list of performers confirmed to date.

More acts are to be announced in the next month including international performers. Last year's event in Abuja, Nigeria saw The Game and Kelly Rowland included as part of the programme.

Known as the Mamas, the second installment in MTV's African awards outing once again has telecommunications giant Zain on board as the named sponsor for the second year running.

Alex Okosi, senior vice president & managing director, MTV Networks Africa said in a statement: 'We are very excited to bring such a distinguished and dynamic artist line-up to the 2009 MTV Africa Music Awards with Zain."

He continued: "These artists exemplify the best that Africa has to offer and demonstrate the extraordinary range and quality of the continent's contemporary musicians."

The TV show of the awards will broadcast on a number of global TV channels from 17 October 2009, including MTV base (DStv Channel 322, Daarsat) and terrestrial channels Citizen TV (Kenya), WBS (Uganda), TBC 1 (Tanzania), TV3 (Ghana), STV (Nigeria) and AIT (Nigeria).
