Japanese telecommunications company Softbank is in talks to acquire a stake in Victor Entertainment from JVC Holdings Inc., the Daily Yomiuri reported Wednesday. Softbank is expected to buy a minority stake and increase its ownership beyond 50% over the next few years.

Since Victor is Japan’s fourth-largest music distributor, a deal would mark a unique union of carrier and content company. The goal of such an acquisition would be to create a competitive advantage over rival telecommunication companies. Softbank operates broadband, fixed-line telecommunication and mobile. It is currently the only official carrier for the iPhone in Japan. Softbank also counts Yahoo Japan Corp., which has a music site, as a subsidiary.
