South Africa's Die Antwoord, which broke out with global Internet hits, makes its live U.S. debut at this weekend's Coachella festival.
The Cape Town-based outfit comprising Ninja, Yo-Landi Vi$$er and DJ Hi-Tek plays the Sahara stage on Saturday (April 17).
New York-based booking agent Joel Zimmerman of William Morris Endeavor Entertainment has taken on Die Antwoord. He tells Billboard.Biz that Coachella's reputation as a festival popular with tastemakers was key in the decision.
"Coachella being a festival known for its 'firsts' wanted Die Antwoord to be added, due to the impact the band has had with the music and online community since the beginning of the year," he says. "We are all very excited about this weekend's show, and plan to announce future touring plans soon."
Die Antwoord is set to showcase the rap-rave music that has earned videos for "Enter The Ninja" and "Zef Side" more than 5 million views combined on YouTube since mid-January 2010.
Following a business trip to the U.S., the Sony/ATV Publishing-signed outfit is now working with William Morris Endeavor on live dates. Ninja and Vi$$er are also working with the agency on their film plans. They are scripting a project called "The Answer" and will appear in the film, for which their music will be an integral part.
Details of the release of the "$O$" album - currently only available as a stream on dieantwoord.com - are still under wraps and no label deal has been confirmed.
