The international media group Bertelsmann is celebrating its 175 anniversary.

On July 1, 1835 the printer and bookbinder Carl Bertelsmann founded the C. Bertelsmann Verlag publishing company in Guttersloh, a town in the Westphalia region of Germany.

Under Reinhard Mohn, the small Protestant publisher grew into a media group that is now comprised of television and radio businesses, book publishing companies, magazines, direct media sales as well as media services, and has a digital presence.

Approximately 100,000 people in over 50 countries work for Bertelsmann; annual revenues most recently came to €15.4 billion ($19.04 billion). The anniversary year has been given the motto "175 Years of Bertelsmann - The Legacy for Our Future" and will initially be celebrated with the employees in the Guttersloh region. In September, there will be a gala ceremony at the Konzerthaus on Berlin’s Gendarmenmarkt, with noted personalities from politics, business, society and culture.

Bertelsmann Chairman & CEO Hartmut Ostrowski said in a statement: "Today is a very special day in the history of our company. At 175 years and going strong, Bertelsmann is one of the most tradition-rich media companies in the world. Driven by entrepreneurial spirit and inspired creativity, Bertelsmann will successfully shape the future of the media and services industry."

Liz Mohn, who represents the fifth generation of the Mohn/Bertelsmann owning family, added: "I feel great joy at celebrating this anniversary with the company and with the employees. It is far from commonplace for a company to be able to look back on such a long and successful history. I am grateful for this, and we as the representatives of the fifth and sixth generation of the Bertelsmann and Mohn families are very proud of it."

Bertelsmann is owner of the television RTL Group, book publishing (Random House), magazine publishing (Gruner + Jahr), media services (Arvato), and media clubs (Direct Group) in more than 50 countries. Bertelsmann has also the BMG Rights Management, a joint venture with the investment group KKR in London.
