U.K. charts compiler the Official Charts Co. (OCC) will expand its commercial activities, following the appointment of former video games executive Giles Jones to the newly created role of head of commercial development.

In his new role, Jones will oversee the development of D2C consumer services and the greater exploitation of chart data through licensing to media partners. He will also be responsible for sales of music/video consumption data to new businesses, including the advertising, toy and video game sectors.

Jones previously held roles at technology companies Ubisoft and LEGO Software and was most recently European GM of software developer the Game Factory.

In a statement, OCC managing director Martin Talbot said Jones' job was "to take our commercial activities to the next level."

"It is great to have someone new on the team with broad experience in sales, retail and distribution, and licensing, with a background of multiplying revenues through the development of new services," Talbot added.

Established in 1998, the OCC is a joint venture between record labels' body the BPI and the Entertainment Retailers Assn.
