BBC Radio 1 DJ Annie Nightingale has entered the Guinness Book of Records as the longest serving female radio presenter.

Nightingale, who began her career at Radio 1 in 1970, has been named the world record holder for the 'Longest Career as a Radio Presenter (female),' an award that was presented to her by Liam Gallagher at the Radio 1 studios in London.

Earlier this month the station held a concert dedicated to the presenter at the Maida Vale studios in London. The show - broadcast the same evening on Radio 1 - featured Paul Weller, Fatboy Slim and Primal Scream amongst others.

Andy Parfitt, controller, BBC Radio 1, commented: "Annie is so important to Radio 1. Over the last 40 years she's connected effortlessly with generations of listeners and sustained amazing energy championing new music every week."

Annie Nightingale's Radio 1 show is broadcast on Friday's between 2am-4am.
