European music streaming service Spotify service claims to have paid out a total of €40 million ($55.5 million) to rights-holders since its launch in October 2008.

Of that €40 million, €30 million ($41.6 million) was paid in 2010, a spokesperson for the company tells Billboard.biz, confirming earlier media reports.

Spotify currently operates in seven European markets, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Norway, Holland, Finland, France and Spain.

The service's much-delayed plans to launch in the U.S., however, appear to be no closer to fruition following strong resistance from major labels during licensing negotiations.
