Mobile communications trade body the GSMA has teamed with the U.K.'s Featured Artists Coalition and Music Managers Forum on a competition for app designers to develop innovative new mobile applications for four participating acts: rock bands Muse and Metric, dance veterans Faithless and pop newcomer Eliza Doolittle.

The Band App Audition seeks to encourage developers to explore how musicians can use apps to engage with fans. The deadline is Jan. 15, 2011. The finalists and winners will be announced at the App Planet event at the GSMA Mobile World Congress being held Feb. 14-17 in Barcelona.

At the contest website, app developers can download briefs for each artist, including specific requirements, exclusive tracks, graphics and other assets. They must submit a three-minute video to the GSMA's contest site, in which they describe and/or demonstrate the app. Winners will be selected by the artists and their managers.

Prizes range from concert tickets and merch to the opportunity to work with the act in the development of the official mobile app.
