As of Wednesday (April 6), Bandcamp had helped pay artists more than $150 million since it was founded in 2008. Of which, it reported $4.3 million in the last 30 days alone.
Amidst the current streaming wars, Bandcamp has largely stayed above the fray without directly competing with the biggest players but serving as a nice alternative favored in large part by independent artists and labels.
With nearly 1 million registered fans (a term which disincludes labels and artists), the platform prides itself on what it calls a transparent, artist-friendly model: It takes a 15 percent cut on digital items (10 percent after $5,000 in annual sales) and 10 percent on physical goods such as vinyl, cassettes and t-shirts, which can all be sold side-by-side on the platform. Since 2012, the privately owned company says it has been profitable and self-funded.
