Tunepics, a once-promising social app that let users pair a photo with a short music clip, has shut down. Justin Cooke, the former Topshop marking exec who founded the app, confirmed to Business Insider that he left the startup late last year to work on an artificial intelligence project. The London-based app announced the impending closure to users back in November, and it has been removed from Apple’s App Store.

At its height, Tunepics boasted 5 million users and $2 million in funding from angel investors, according to The Drum. The self-proclaimed "multi-sensory social network" let users give their photos a 30-second soundtrack from their iTunes playlists. The app also featured tools and filters to dress up the photos with various mood-related treatments like added rainbows, colors, rain and more.

Apple named Tunepics one of the best apps of 2014, a list that also included Uber and Airbnb.

Cooke told BI that "long-term costs exceeded the likely growth potential" of the app, with a source pointing to rising costs of music licensing fees. A message to Tunepics for comment was not immediately returned.
