Heavy metal outfit Mastodon has announced it will accept payments in the form of bitcoin for its upcoming album, “Once More ‘Round the Sun.”

Bitcoin payment service provider BitPay is handling transactions. Last week, 50 Cent announced he would accept Bitcoin payments for his new album, “Animal Ambition”, using the same service.

“Technology is what’s changing the business gotta get with it,” 50 Cent said in a Reddit AMA last week. “I take money no matter if its coins or dollars.”

Mastadon now joins 50 Cent as the first mainstream artists to accept the the virtual currency. 

“BitPay is honored to partner with Warner Bros. Records artist Mastodon. Having a major label artist embrace bitcoin is a definite sign of bitcoin’s growth and expansion into the world of music,” said Tony Gallippi, BitPay’s Co-founder and Executive Chairman in a press release. 

The Atlanta group’s “Once More ‘Round the Sun” is available for pre-order at $10.99, or approximately 0.018 BTC. Purchase comes with an instant download of the album single "High Road” and song “Chimes at Midnight”, as well as the full album download at 320 kbps on its June 24 street date. 

“We’re excited to work with fellow Atlanta-natives BitPay for our new album,” the group said in the press release. “We want to give our fans as many options to buy our new album as possible, and are happy that bitcoin can be one of those choices.”

Mastodon is signed to Warner Bros. Records. This is their sixth album since 2001. In that time, the band has received two Grammy nominations.
