Venkat Panchapakesan has been named the head of engineering at YouTube, it was announced today. Panchapakesan was previously a VP of engineering at Google, an extremely influential position at a company where engineers are highly prized. There, he headed up the company's Apps group, as Re/code reported.
While recent, concrete news on YouTube's forthcoming music streaming service has been either nil or pointedly critical of its business tactics across the pond, Panchapakesan's new appointment will, no doubt, put the technological backbone of that new service firmly within his remit. Panchapakesan will report to YouTube's new boss, Susan Wojcicki, who took the reins in February.
Panchapakesan was formerly a Bangalore-based entrepreneur-in-residence at the blue-chip firm Greylock Partners. Greylock invested $35 million in Pandora in 2009, the company's Series D round.
