Twitter Mulling SoundCloud Buy (Report)

Twitter is reportedly mulling an acquisition of SoundCloud, according to Re/code, who spoke to people with ties to both companies.

SoundCloud, founded in 2007 by Eric Wahlforss, and Alexander Ljung, has raised $123.3 million in four funding rounds since its launch. The service had 40 million users as of last year. Twitter claims 255 million monthly users.

SoundCloud, once a wild-west of copyright which allowed users to upload any and everything, implemented a copyright identification system three years ago, which is still drawing criticism over its automatic blocking procedures.

The company has recently made overtures to expand beyond music, as a recent job posting made clear. The listing, looking for a head of audio, lists as its first responsibility "making non-music as significant as music on SoundCloud."

For its part, Twitter has had a difficult time joining the music community, launching its #Music app in April 2013, shuttering it exactly one year later.

The last acquisition Twitter made was the social media aggregation API company Gnip, acquired last month.

SoundCloud declined comment; Twitter did not return request for comment at press time.
