Concert listing site Bandsintown announced on their blog that the number of registered concertgoers has grown to 10 million -- the equivalent of the 13th largest city or the 87th largest country in the world.
Founded in 2007, the San Diego-based company -- which operates in the same space as U.K.-based Songkick, another concert listing that pushes its information to partner services -- made public its concert API (used by the likes of Shazam, eMusic, SoundHound, ReverbNation, all four major labels and many independents) in 2009.
The next year saw Bandsintown launch a Facebook app before being acquired by mobile developer and publisher Cellfish in 2011, the same year Bandsintown launched an iPhone app and saw its stock start to grow exponentially, according to the graph posted to their site.
This milestone comes just a few months after Bandsintown, which gets 40 million unique monthly views and at one point claimed to be the largest live music app, inked a deal with Sony Music Unlimited that gives Bandsintown users the ability to preview music by artists whose concerts are listed in its app and who are included in Sony's 25 million-song catalog (which Sony hopes Bandsintown users will then access via its on-demand streaming service).
In November of last year, Bandsintown also partnered with the Agency Group, the outsized talent booking agency based in Manhattan which represents close to 2,000 clients (about the same number of artists Bandsintown signs up each week, according to a statement). The deal allows the two companies work more closely in order to drive fan awareness of Agency Group clients' touring schedules, driving ticket sales and merchandising. On another note somewhat related to the latter, in September Bandsintown partnered with lighter company Zippo to integrate their concert push notifications with the company's Virtual Lighter app.
