SiriusXM Indie Awards: Japandroids, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Metric Win Big During Canadian Music Week

Canada’s SirusXM Indie Awards, held each year in Toronto as part of Canadian Music Week, honoured some rather big names Friday night (March 22) -- for an awards ceremony that strictly honors independent artists -- including Taylor Swift, Carly Rae Jepsen, deadmau5, Mumford & Sons and fun.

The sold-out show, known as The Indies -- and now in its 13th year -- recognizes the achievements of Canadian and international independent artists, in multiple genres including punk/hardcore, dance, jazz, country, folk/roots, metal, plus other non-genre specific categories.

The 37 winners were determined by a combination of fan and industry voting.

The awards were also broadcast live for SiriusXM subscribers in Canada and the U.S. on The Verge (XM 151) and Iceberg (Sirius 151).

Album of the Year went to Japandroids for Celebration Rock on Polyvinyl Recording Co.; 604 Records signing Carly Rae Jepsen won Artist of the Year, Most Played Independent Artist, and Single for “Call Me Maybe;” Metric, which is on its own label, nabbed Group of the Year and Best-Selling Independent Release for Synthetica.

Deadmau5, on Ultra Music, was awarded Live Artist of the Year; Arts & Crafts’ artist Cold Specks for Female Artist of the Year; Grimes, on 4AD/Arbutus, for Electronic Artist of the Year; and The Weeknd, on XO& Co, Soul/R&B Artist.

Canailles and Poor Young Things each scored $5000 from SiriusXM Canada, after walking away with SiriusXM Emerging Artist of the Year, in the French and English categories, respectively.

In the International categories, The Black Keys, on Nonesuch, snagged Group of the Year; Big Machine’s Taylor Swift landed Artist of the Year; Glassnote’s Mumford & Sons won Album of the Year for Babel; Fueled By Ramen’s Fun. for Single of the Year for “We Are Young;” and The Lumineers on Toronto label Dine Alone scored Breakthrough Group of the Year. (See the full list of winners below.)

Interspersed between the handouts were live performances, beginning with Cadence Weapon, then a special appearance by Australia’s 360, followed by Canailles, The Wooden Sky, Cold Specks, Yukon Blonde, Diamond Rings, Matt Mays, capped off by a headlining concert by Metric.
