Pop/rock quartet 5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) is quickly becoming an online force that can sway its online fan army to achieve Social 50 chart success. This week, following 5SOS’ performance on the May 18 Billboard Music Awards, the band surges into the top five (23-4) -- their highest position date.

The Social 50, whose formula was updated last week, incorporates the following metrics: weekly additions of fans across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram; reactions and conversations across Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Facebook; and views to an artist’s Wikipedia page, according to music analytics provider Next Big Sound.

While 5SOS doesn’t have anywhere near the largest following among the artists at the top of the Social 50 (they have 3.21 million fans on Facebook and 2.92 million Twitter followers), the band commands an ability to get fans to answer almost any online call-to-action which gives them commendable engagement metrics.

For the week ending May 18, the group saw more than 2.5 million mentions of their handle on Twitter and their tweets were retweeted more than 1.3 million times (more than that of Katy Perry, Twitter’s most followed account), according to Next Big Sound.

Further down the list, Solange Knowles debuts on the Social 50 at No. 40 after a video surfaced on TMZ of her elevator scuffle with brother-in-law Jay Z on May 12. What followed was an online hurricane of news stories, "Saturday Night Live" spoofs, and more.

In comparing the three days before the TMZ video and to the three days that followed, Solange experienced across-the-board increases in online metrics from when the video broke on Monday, May 12.

For example, she saw a 1,210 percent increase in Facebook likes (up 36,000) and an 18.773 percent increase in Twitter followers (up 184,000).

Traffic to her Wikipedia page experienced a 5,168 percent gain, as 318,000 people visited her Wikipedia page. Mentions of her Twitter handle increased by 9,701 percent, with 66,300 people mentioning Solange since the news first broke. Views to her videos also experienced an increase, up 114 percent over the amount she received the previous three days.

Back in the top 10, Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus remain at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, while Shakira ascends 6-3 and Nicki Minaj climbs 10-5. 

Regional Mexican giants, La Arrolladora Banda el Limon de Rene Camacho, jump 11-6, thanks to the release of its new single "Me Dejaste Acostumbrado." It debuted at No. 2 on Regional Mexican Digital Songs, and the resulting online buzz sends them to new heights on the Social 50 ranking. The group has 11 million likes on Facebook, a sizable audience that grew by 100 percent over the amount gained in the previous week. This audience inspired more than 9 million conversations about the band (and their new single), which is responsible for their 11-6 ascent.

As for the rest of the top 10, Beyoncé slips 5-7, as Ariana Grande falls 3-8. Her "Problem" pal Iggy Azalea bounces 14-9 to land among the top 10 for the first time. Selena Gomez slides 4-10 to anchor the region.
