Miley Cyrus Rebounds Up Social 50

As her Bangerz tour left Canada to head towards New York City, a slew of online activity pertaining to Miley Cyrus provides her with a bump in social activity over the previous week, helping her to rise 7-3 on Billboard's Social 50 chart with a 23 percent rise in overall score. (Cyrus has spent 16 weeks at No. 1 on the tally, most recently the week of Feb. 1.)

The Social 50 ranks the most popular artists on YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, Wikipedia, Myspace and Instagram. The chart's methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist page views, song plays and reactions as measured by music analytics company Next Big Sound.

Early in the week ending April 6, while she was in Toronto, Cyrus posted an April Fool's video on Instagram with Avril Lavigne in which the two pop stars pretend to fight over who's the most famous star in Canada. Lavigne benefits from the exposure, as well, as she flies 36-18, her highest position since the Jan. 25 chart week (when she peaked at No. 8). Lavigne was aided primarily by Cyrus' large audience (10.3 million) following Lavigne on the photo/video sharing platform. During the week, Lavigne added 206,000 new followers on Instagram, while Cyrus added 132,000.

Also during the week came the news that Miley’s dog Floyd passed away, a sad announcement that she shared with her audience via Facebook. The post was met with an outpouring of support from fans, receiving 37,000 likes to date, which helped contribute to more than 1.8 million stories about Miley on the Facebook platform where, she adds 445,000 new fans to her audience during the chart's tracking week.

Pharrell enjoys a happy jump on the Social 50, bounding 20-12 in the wake of his "Saturday Night Live" (NBC) appearance on April 5 (his 41st birthday). The promotion throughout the week (with host Anna Kendrick) helped increase mentions of Pharrell on Twitter by 134 percent over the previous week, which helped him accrue 72,000 new followers (up 42 percent week over week). (His smash "Happy" leads the Billboard Hot 100 for a seventh week.)

Austin Mahone continues his climb on the Social 50 for a fourth week in a row (19-16, marking a new peak; he first appeared on the list back in November 2011). On March 7, he announced that his debut album, "The Secret," is due May 27. Mahone also Instagrammed several pictures of himself in the studio with Justin Bieber and Birdman, which gained notable traction online. For the chart week, a 28 percent rise in conversation over the previous frame leads to the addition of 251,000 new fans to his overall audience.

Recapping the Social 50's top 10, Bieber and Shakira remain steady at Nos. 1 and 2 (above Cyrus), while Katy Perry dips 3-4. Taylor Swift rises 8-5, displacing Ariana Grande (5-6). Eminem elevates 9-7, along with Pitbull (11-8) and Romeo Santos (13-9), who cracks the top 10 for the first time since the Dec. 21 chart week (when he reached a No. 6 highpoint). Bruno Mars remains at No. 10 to anchor the top bracket.
