It's not 1960-something, although a look at two new entries on the Billboard 200 albums chart might cause a double-take. The Beatles chart their 31st top 10 on the ranking, while Elvis Presley pads his lead for the most titles in the tally's 57-history.
New at No. 7 is the Beatles' "On Air: Live at the BBC Volume 2," which bows with 37,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The arrival, which culls live-in-studio performances between 1962 and 1964, ups the Fab Four's top 10 total to 31.
The Beatles had last charted a new top 10 effort back in 2006 with "Love," the companion album to the Cirque du Soleil stage production based on the band's music. (The band did return to the top 10 after that, but with a previously-released album that had already been in the top 10: In 2011, the hits set "1," first released in 2000, returned to the top 10 for two weeks, thanks to its arrival in the iTunes Store.)
Among all acts, the Rolling Stones boast the most Billboard 200 top 10s: 36. They logged their last new top 10 in 2005 with their most recent studio album, "A Bigger Bang." It debuted and peaked at No. 3 on the Sept. 24, 2005, chart.
The Beatles' new release is a sequel to 1994's "Live at the BBC" and is only the third Beatles-endorsed live album. The other, the out-of-print "The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl," reached No. 2 in 1977. The first "BBC" set debuted and peaked at No. 3, selling 360,000 copies in its first week (Dec. 24, 1994); it returns to the chart this week at No. 34 with 9,000 sold (up 505%).
Here's an updated look at the acts with the most top 10 albums since the Billboard 200 became a weekly chart in March 1956:
36, the Rolling Stones
33, Frank Sinatra
32, Barbra Streisand
31, the Beatles
27, Elvis Presley
Speaking of Presley, the late King of Rock & Roll bows at No. 147 on the Billboard 200 with "Merry Christmas… Love, Elvis." The 12-song holiday collection, released this year, marks his 129th charted album, extending his record for the most appearances in the list's archives. Frank Sinatra ranks second with 82 entries.
