Pitbull and Justin Timberlake make vaults into the top 10 on Billboard's Social 50 chart, following busy weeks for each star, while affinity for the late George Jones results in his making the survey for the first time.
The Social 50 ranks the most popular artists on YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, Wikipedia, Myspace and Instagram. The chart's methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist pageviews, song plays and reactions.
First, to promote their upcoming joint summer tour, Pitbull released a remix of Ke$ha's "Crazy Kids" to his SoundCloud page. The single generated online buzz, which helped him to add 890,000 overall fans to his audience for the week (up 39%). The Pitbull/Ke$ha North American tour kicks off May 23 in Boston.
Then, Mr. Worldwide teamed up with Italian singer Arianna to turn a television commercial for the FIAT 500 sedan into a full-fledged song, complete with a music video. "Sexy People (The FIAT Song)" has racked more than 3 million global views on VEVO since its April 26 debut, contributing to the 18.2 million plays received by Pitbull during the chart's tracking week (up 6%).
Timberlake also jumps back into the Social 50's top five, soaring 13-4. On April 25, he performed two songs on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," including his current single "Mirrors." The appearance led to a 5% bump in conversation on the Facebook platform, where he added 445,000 new fans (up 14%). On Instagram, a fan-driven promotion designed to give away Timberlake concert tickets as prizes caused a 193% boost in weekly follower-acquisition on the platform.
Further down the tally, late country music icon George Jones debuts at No. 41 as fans react to his passing on April 26. The biggest impact on his metrics comes from the views category, as weekly views to his Wikipedia page jumped by more than 5,000%, bringing in a total of 467,000 pageviews for the week ending Sunday, April 28. Fans rushed to his official social media channels on Facebook and Twitter (where a staff is periodically posting updates), resulting in a 365% jump in weekly fan acquisition to those properties. Fans also remembered Jones by watching videos of his music posted online, as evidenced by the more than 396,000 plays (up 1,600%) received on his YouTube and VEVO channels.
Back to the Social 50 top 10, Justin Bieber regains his position at the helm (2-1), while Rihanna (3-2) and Taylor Swift (7-3) also climb. One Direction bounds 10-6 and Bruno Mars lifts 8-7. Katy Perry re-enters the top tier (12-8), as does Michael Jackson (15-9).
P!nk, meanwhile, ascends 17-10 as her single "Just Give Me a Reason," with fun.'s Nate Ruess, notches a third week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. This week marks P!nk's first week in the Social 50 top 10, dating to the chart's Dec. 11, 2010, launch.
