YAHOO! BUYS TUMBLR, PROMISES ‘NOT TO SCREW IT UP’

Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) and Tumblr announced today that they have reached a definitive agreement for Yahoo! to acquire Tumblr. Total consideration is approximately $1.1 billion, substantially all of which is payable in cash. Per the agreement and our promise not to screw it up, Tumblr will be independently operated as a separate business. David Karp will remain CEO. The product, service and brand will continue to be defined and developed separately with the same Tumblr irreverence, wit, and commitment to empower creators.

UK’S OFFICIAL STREAMING CHART TALLIES 4.4 BILLION STREAMS IN FIRST YEAR

To mark the first anniversary of the Official Streaming Chart, the Official Charts Company reveal the UK’s most streamed tracks of the last twelve months. Launched in May of last year, the Official Streaming Chart ranks audio streams from both ad-funded and subscription streaming services in the UK including Spotify, Deezer, Napster, Zune, Omnifone, Bloom and We7 among others. More than 4.4 billion streams were served across the year, with the Top 100 most streamed tracks accounting for 9.7% of that total. Fun. FT Janelle Monae’s “We Are Young” was the most streamed audio track of the year.

DENMARK'S EMMELIE DE FOREST WINS EUROVISION SONG CONTEST

Denmark won the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday before an international TV audience of around 125 million, winning with the annual competition with a barefoot performance backed by flutes and drums.

MUTE APPOINTS GLOBAL MD AND HEAD OF ARTIST MANAGEMENT

Mute has appointed Shirin Foroutan as global managing director of the Mute group and Dick O’Dell as head of Artist Management. Prior to joining Mute, Foroutan  served as senior legal advisor to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Ceremonies; director, Legal Affairs of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and director, Legal Affairs of Live Nation Global Touring. O’Dell began his career in the music industry with the establishment of Y Records, successes of which included The Pop Group, The Slits, Shriekback and Pigbag. He then moved into management working with artists such as Gang of Four, William Orbit (with whom he founded Guerilla Records), Leftfield, Beth Orton and Ed Harcourt.

DAFT PUNK COLLABORATOR ROMANTHONY DIES AGED 46

Romanthony, an influential house producer and singer best known for performing the vocals on Daft Punk's single "One More Time," has been reported to have died earlier this month. The artist, born Anthony Moore, reportedly passed away at his home in Austin, Tex. on May 7. As Chicago's 5 Magazine points out, Romanthony's sister Mellony Moore confirmed the passing in a Facebook post on May 9, and friend/collaborators like Boys Noize, MikeQ and Daone Remmidy (better known as Eve Angel) have all taken to social media to confirm the news and express their grief. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

GREAT GOOGAMOOGA FESTIVAL CANCELLED SUNDAY

Brooklyn's Great GoogaMooga festival cancelled its final day Sunday as the weather in New York City took a turn for the worse. "NYC Parks Dept, Prospect Park Alliance & #Googamooga have canceled today's event in the interest of safety & prevention of damage to park," the festival tweeted shortly after noon today. Sunday's lineup included Kool and the Gang -- a recent addition after Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings had to withdraw in the days leading up to the festival -- De La Soul and the Soul Rebels Brass Band.
