Plagued by production woes, the Lifetime TV movie, executive-produced by Wendy Williams, originally cast Zendaya Coleman in the lead role, only to lose the Disney star after she felt it wasn't being "handled delicately." Aaliyah's family publicly opposed the project, accusing the filmmakers of failing to "consider the perspectives of those who were closest to Aaliyah."
