When Kiss spit fire on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and announced it wouldn't perform to mark its own long-awaited induction to the hall, it was the latest in a series of squabbles that have pitted the institution against those it celebrates. Long-festering disputes have caused onstage embarrassment almost from the start -- in 1988 Diana Ross and Paul McCartney sat out the induction of The Supremes and The Beatles -- and have continued ever since (see sidebar).
