William Hurt will play current-day Gregg Allman in the biopic “Midnight Rider” that is scheduled to begin shooting in February in Savannah, Ga.

Tyson Ritter, lead singer of the All American Rejects, is playing young Gregg Allman with Wyatt Russell as guitarist Duane Allman. Hurt, most recently seen on Lifetime’s mini-series “Bonnie & Clyde,” won an Oscar for “The Kiss of the Spider Woman.”

The film is based on Allman’s biography “My Cross To Bear” written with Alan Light. The film focuses on Gregg’s early struggles through the formation of the Allman Brothers Band and the group’s popularity and Gregg’s struggles to end his drug and alcohol abuse.

Writer-producer Jody Savin and director/writer/producer Randall Miller are working with Allman and his manager, Michael Lehman, both of whom will be executive producers. Open Road Films will be handling the U.S. release; the Exchange will handle the international sales on the film.
