Juan Magan (left) signs his deal with Jesus Lopez, chairman/CEO Universal Music Latin America & Iberian Peninsula
Spanish DJ, composer and producer Juan Magán has signed an exclusive recording deal with Universal Music Latin Entertainment, Billboard.biz has learned. Magán was previously signed to Sony Music.
Magán broke ground last year as the most prominent DJ in the Latin music charts with his hit “Bailando por el Mundo.” The track, a mix of electronica and Latin dance beats featuring Pitbull and Dominican rapper El Cata, reached No. 1 on the chart in 2012. Its success helped Magán, who is also a singer, to become a six-time finalist for this year’s Billboard Latin Music Awards, including a bid for New Artist of the year. Magán also garnered three Latin Grammy nominations last year.
“Juan Magán is a great complement to our artist roster in the region and gives us strong presence in the global EDM scene,” said Jesús López, chairman/CEO Universal Music Latin America & Iberian Peninsula. “Juan has also shown great talent in production, remixes and as a discoverer of new talent. He is, without a doubt, the best-rounded Latin artist in his genre and the one with most potential to grow internationally in any of his artistic fields.”
Prior to his success stateside, the 34-year-old Magán had a series of major hits in Spain and was already known here as a remixer who had worked with the likes of Nelly Furtado and Juanes and had several hits under his belt. He gained broad recognition last year with “Bailando por Ahí,” which, after hitting No. 1 in ITunes Spain, began to get rotation in mainstream radio. The track crossed the Atlantic when Magán remixed it with Pitbull and El Cata and renamed it “Bailando por el mundo.”
