MAJOR LABEL JOIN TO SAVE HMV; HILCO IS FAVORED BIDDER

The world's biggest music labels and film studios are reportedly assembling a multimillion dollar rescue package to prevent HMV from going out of business. Universal Music, Warner Music and Sony are set to cut the price of CDs and DVDs, and give the retailer generous credit terms. Industry sources said the entertainment giants were desperate to keep alive a specialist retailer to avoid cut-throat pricing by supermarkets and internet distributors. Meanwhile, the entertainment consortium is said to favor restructuring specialist Hilco's bid to save music retailer HMV from administration.

LUPE FIASCO KICKED OFF D.C. STAGE FOLLOWING ANTI-OBAMA RANT

apper Lupe Fiasco was the headliner at the StartUp RockOn concert to celebrate President Obama's reelection last night. Fiasco celebrated by spending more than 30 minutes rapping an anti-Obama song, and was eventually booted off stage. Organizers said Fiasco wasn't kicked-off for his views, but because the "bizarrely repetitive, jarring performance that left the crowd vocally dissatisfied, organizers decided to move on to the next act."

A REVAMPED MYSPACE SITE FACES A PROBLEM WITH INDIE MUSIC RIGHTS

Myspace quietly relaunched last week boasting the biggest library in digital music but now Merlin, a group representing thousands of small labels, says the service is using its members' music without permission. Charles Caldas, chief executive of Merlin, said in an interview that its deal with Myspace expired over a year ago, yet songs from more than 100 of its labels are still available on Myspace, including Beggars Group, Domino and Merge, three of the biggest independents.

Atlanta rap star Ludacris is raising the profile of his custom "Soul" headphone line, with the signing of NFL superstar Tim Tebow. Ludacris' company Soul Electronics is producing and marketing the new SL300 line which will be endorsed by Tim Tebow. The cans were developed specifically for athletes and the rigors of training.

NMPA, WARNER MUSIC GROUP REACH NEW LICENSING DEAL FOR MUSIC VIDEOS

National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA) announced today it has negotiated a model licensing deal with Warner Music Group (WMG) for music videos.  This agreement enables songwriters and music publishers to receive a percentage of the revenue generated from WMG's music videos in exchange for the use of their musical works in those music videos. The deal will be offered to all NMPA members on an opt in basis through the Harry Fox Agency
