CES 2013: Voxx Announces New Products Including a 'Streaming Mat' for Smartphones

Voxx, the umbrella company that includes familiar names ranging from Klipsch to RCA, is doubling down on the music market.

The company, at its pre-show press conference at the International CES, announced a new simplified speaker system line called the Soundflow Audio System, which lets music lovers listen to their libraries by simply placing their smartphone on a mat.

"The smartphone has become our own personal jukebox," said Ian Geise, senior vice president of product management for Voxx. "We can virtually get any song we want delivered at a moment's notice. That part is easy. It's getting the music from the smartphones to your ears that can be a problem.

Voxx will offer a suite of Soundflow products, ranging from table top models to portable, with both battery-powered and AC options. The majority are scheduled to go on sale in April.

Also en route, with a tentative March ship date, is a whole-home audio system, letting consumers stream music from their smartphone, tablets or other devices using in-home WiFi and Apple's AirPlay service to different rooms in the home (avoiding hefty installation fees). The AR Stream Audio System will have one-, two- and three-room configurations, prices at $199, $399 and $599.

"The marketers and developers at Acoustic Research asked a pool of consumers a simple question: if you could have a sound system in your entire home for less than $800, would you be interested? The response was an overwhelming yes. So, we made it happen," said David Geise, President of VOXX Accessories Corp.

And for those who can't afford high-end headphones, Voxx plans to release a new mid-range model that it promises has superior sound quality.

The 808 line will offer a trio of headphones with 40mm drivers, detachable cords and a foldable design. And full-sized over the ear model will go on sale later this month for $99.99. Two other models, including earbuds, are due out in the second quarter.
