RIAJ releases preliminary data for 2003
According to preliminary data issued by the Recording Industry Assn. of Japan (RIAJ), production of audio software (including music videos and music DVDs) by the trade body's 24 member companies totaled 350 million units during 2003, down 1% from 2002.
In value terms, production for the year in the world's second-biggest music market was down 5% to ¥456 billion ($4.3 billion).
Production of CD albums was down an estimated 5% in quantity terms to 312.2 million units, for a value of ¥388 billion ($3.6 billion), down 10%. On a brighter note, production of music DVDs rose 142% to an estimated 2.7 million units, for a value of ¥5 billion ($47 million), up 74%.
The RIAJ will release official production data for 2003 at the end of January.
