Telecommunications giant Cable & Wireless is poised to roll out a European music download platform through a partnership with German digital service provider 24/7 MusicShop.

The parties unveiled their cooperative agreement to develop and market the Cable & Wireless-branded service yesterday at Midem. The initiative is pitched as a one-stop shop solution for businesses to offer legitimate downloads to consumers.

Phonofile Denmark has signed up as the first B2B customer. Phonofile Denmark is expected to launch in March a tailored service offering 200,000 downloads (eventually increasing to 500,000). Licensing agreements are already in place with three of the five majors.

"We're looking at [expanding into] all the major European markets," says Paresh Modi, managing director of the media, entertainment and technology business for Cable & Wireless.
