Top U.K. producer Robin Millar has paid a reported £3 million ($5.45 million) for Sony Studios on Whitfield Street in London, which opened in 1965 as CBS Studios before it was acquired by Sony Corp.

Millar, famous for his work with British hitmakers such as Sade and Style Council, bought the property through his London-based Arts Media company. He plans to rename the facility Whitfield Street Studios.

The studio is renowned for its popularity among legendary acts ranging from Jimi Hendrix and the Clash to Madonna. Its Studio One section has been used regularly for recording movie soundtracks.

The studio has been on sale since 2002 and was closed down by Sony Corp. last year.
