Mike Sault has been appointed A&R director of Mercury Records U.K. He joins from Warner/Chappell U.K., where he was creative director. His start date will be announced shortly.

During Sault's eight-year tenure at Warner/Chappell, he signed such leading U.K. artists and songwriters as Dido, Brian Higgins and Mark Hill.

Sault will report jointly to Mercury managing director Greg Castell and Universal Music U.K. chairman/CEO Lucian Grainge. He will also work alongside Mercury executive VP Matt Jagger. Castell, Jagger and Sault constitute the label's senior management team.

Billboard.biz understands that Sault will have responsibilities beyond the A&R realm. He will be directly in charge of Mercury's Fontana label unit.

Last month, Mercury U.K. co-managing director Steve Lillywhite announced he was leaving the company after two years in the job. A source at Universal Music U.K. says that Sault's arrival is not linked to Lillywhite's departure. "We were talking to him before Lillywhite considered leaving," says the source.

Sault comments: "I've had a fantastic time working at Warner/Chappell, particularly on the artist-development side of things, but after eight years I feel that it's time for a change, and to take that process one stage further and try and put some records out too."

Prior to joining Warner/Chappell, Sault worked in A&R capacities at BMG and Epic.
