With three accolades, German-language pop group Wir sind Helden was the big winner at the national Echo Awards, held Saturday (March 6) in Berlin's International Congress Center (ICC).

The Virgin/EMI act took the national radio and video newcomer awards and was presented with the German Phono Academy's national newcomer award. In addition, Virgin/EMI took the marketing trophy for their work on the band. Were it not for label-mates PUR (EMI) claiming the national group rock/pop category, Wir sind Helden would have achieved a clean-sweep.

Pop singer Yvonne Catterfeld - who entered the gala as co-leader with four nominations - took home the national female artist rock/pop award. Goth-rockers Evanescence triumphed in the international group rock/pop, and alternative international group categories. German pop singer Howard Carpendale (Universal) was honored with the lifetime achievement award.

EMI took seven Echos on the night, while BMG and Universal got five apiece. Broadcaster RTL aired the show with a two-hour delay.
