In its first major involvement with a corporate sponsor, Dashboard Confessional is headlining the 2004 Honda Civic Tour. The outing launches May 13 at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine, and will include 34 shows in primary and secondary markets. Thrice will open the primarily amphitheater tour, which is currently scheduled to wrap June 27 at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, N.J.
Speaking at a press conference today (March 8) in Los Angeles, Dashboard front man Chris Carrabba said the main reason the band inked a sponsorship deal was to give fans an affordable ticket price. Tickets for the outing will cost $20-$25; most dates are on sale now.
"This was a big decision to make ... but we couldn't go into these size of rooms and give value back to kids [without Honda]," Carrabba said.
Previous Dashboard tours have played mainly clubs and theaters. The band's latast album, "A Mark, a Mission, a Brand, a Scar" (Vagrant) debuted and peaked at No. 2 on The Billboard 200 in August 2003. It has since sold 558,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Honda has previously sponsored tours by Blink 182, New Found Glory and Good Charlotte.
As part of the deal, Carrabba will personally design a Civic that fans can win through upcoming radio contests. Ten cars will be produced, and all will come with iPod-ready interfaces.
Two other support acts for the tour will be announced shortly.
