Univision Online has partnered with Agmobile, the new-media subsidiary of American Greetings Corp., to form Univision Mobile. The new unit, to be announced today, will provide Spanish-language content, including ringtones, to cellphone users in North America.
Univision Mobile will draw music, entertainment and other content from its sister divisions at Spanish-language media giant Univision. The new unit will also generate its own content. Because Agmobile has licenses from all major music publishers, it can provide ringtones from music artists signed to other companies.
Univision Mobile will be aggressively marketed through Univision's multiple media outlets. The brand will launch in tandem with a yet-to-be-announced carrier, and will eventually be made available to leading mobile-phone services in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Agmobile has existing partnerships with T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, Cingular Wireless, AT&T Wireless and Vodafone.
"Ringtones is one of the few music sectors where there's actually growth," says Bryan
Biniak, senior VP/GM of Agmobile. "And if you combine that with the fact that Hispanics are the fastest-growing population, with the largest [cellular] phone bills per month, it basically says you should be thinking about this market more than any other market."
