MTV Australia has unveiled plans to hold its inaugural awards gala in May 2005. Winners at the MTV Australia Video Music Awards will be chosen by viewer votes, and nominations determined by a voting body of viewers, music-industry executives and journalists. A VH1 Lifetime Achievement Award is among the accolades on offer.

MTV has pledged frontline local and international acts for the performance, which will be broadcast live. Sydney is expected to host the event.

MTV Australia GM Helen Ryan and Andrew Hoppe, MTV Networks Australia's recently appointed director of programming and production, will be executive producers.

News of the Australian awards was announced to coincide with the official launch Down Under of VH1, which has rolled out as part of digital pay-TV packages introduced by local operators Foxtel Digital and Austar Digital. MTV launched in Australia in the mid-1990s.
