Former Arista Records executive VP of promotion Steve Bartels has been named president of Island Records, according to sources. Bartels is expected to take his new post today (April 26).

The move reunites him with former Arista chief Antonio "L.A." Reid, chairman of Island Def Jam Music Group. Bartels takes over for Julie Greenwald, who was named president of the Atlantic Music Group last month. Bartels will report directly to Reid.

A spokesman for Universal Music Group could not be reached for comment.

Bartels' appointment firms up Island Def Jam's new leadership under Reid since the January departure of former head Lyor Cohen to become head of Warner Music Group's U.S. division. Def Jam Records will continue to be led by Kevin Liles, who resigned his post in February but ultimately returned to the label.

While at Arista, Bartels was instrumental in working such top acts as Avril Lavigne, Usher and OutKast.
