Billy Getz, the owner and president of Cleveland-based Scene Specialties, died this morning (May 3) after a long battle with an undisclosed illness. Getz was a music industry fixture for many years, as his firm specialized in designing and building promotional tchotchkes for record labels. He was 55.

Getz is also known for putting together one of the industry's longest-running golf tournaments, held each year at the National Assn. of Recording Merchandisers convention. Bill Frohlich, exec VP at Sony Music Distribution, says that Gets was one of the most well-known execs in the industry. "He was a good friend and he will be missed," Frohlich says.

Getz is survived by his wife Peggy and three daughters. A service is scheduled for Thursday (May 6) in Cleveland, although exact details are not known at deadline.
