Thierry Chassagne has been appointed president of Warner Music France, effective immediately. He takes over a position left unfilled since the death last summer of the Paris-based company's former chief executive, Yan-Philippe Blanc.

Former Warner Music Spain president Saul Tagarro was acting chairman of the French company during the transition period.

Since the sale in January of Warner Music to a group of investors led by Edgar Bronfman, Chassagne's name was widely circulated as the most likely candidate for the job.

In his new role, Chassagne reports to Warner Music International (WMI) chairman/CEO Paul-Rene Albertini. He was previously managing director of Up Music, a joint venture label he founded in 2002 in partnership with Warner Music France. Since its launch, Up Music has had six albums in France's top 20, and eight top 10 singles, including four at No. 1. The label claims a market share of 2%.

It is understood that Up Music will continue as a stand-alone label for the time being, but sources suggest that Chassagne will conduct a thorough review of Warner Music France's structure.

The company has two stand-alone labels--WEA and EastWest--and a satellite label, Tot Ou Tard, specialized in exploiting French repertoire. Tot Ou Tard releases go through WEA.

In a note to staff, Albertini said that he was "extremely confident that during the challenging times we are all encountering, Thierry's talent and expertise will help us position the company for success."

He added: "I would like to use this opportunity to pay tribute to Yan-Phillipe Blanc for his outstanding work which transformed our French company-growing our market share from 8% to 14%, and for bringing on board great talent and partners like Thierry."

Albertini said Chassagne's task is "to continue to grow our French company, and maximize its operating performance."

Prior to launching Up Music, Chassagne was managing director of Sony Music France's Epic label and founder/managing director of V2 Music France.
