This summer, the Napster 2.0 digital-music service will become the first on-demand subscription service available to Canadian music consumers. Napster, a division of Roxio, Inc., will offer Canadian consumers a localized version of Napster 2.0, complete with Canadian-specific radio stations, promotions and content from domestic acts.

Last year the Canadian Recording Industry Assn. and the Canadian Music Reproduction Rights Agency brokered an online licensing agreement paving the way for the launching of commercial digital services in Canada. The first and only local digital store prior to Napster is à la carte download service Puretracks, which Toronto-based Moontaxi Media launched last Fall.

Roxio has opened an office in Richmond Hill, Ontario, that will serve as the Canadian headquarters for the Napster service. Napster's U.S.-based personnel will initially be responsible for the service's operations in Canada.
