Jay-Z and Rick James will be the top honorees at this year's ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards.

The 17th annual gala, set for June 28 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, will honor rap pioneer Jay-Z with the Golden Note Award. He joins a list of past winners including songwriters/composers Garth Brooks, Quincy Jones, Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and Stevie Wonder.

Punk/funk progenitor James will be presented with the Heritage Award. Earth, Wind & Fire, Chaka Khan and Peabo Bryson are previous recipients.

The evening's event will also honor the top ASCAP R&B/hip-hop, rap and reggae songwriters and publishers of 2003.
