Apple and eBay have joined Yahoo! and MTV as media partners for Quincy Jones' "We Are the Future" (WAF) concert, scheduled Sunday in Rome, Italy. The event will raise funds to help children in war-ravaged cities around the world.
Apple's iTunes Music Store will be the exclusive online distributor for the "We Are the Future" single, due May 25. EBay will host a charity auction of celebrity items provided by the Burbank, C.A.-based WAF organization. Kompolt, a C.A.-based online auction management agency, will oversee all auction listings on the WAF's behalf.
Norah Jones, Alicia Keys, Patti Austin, Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli, Herbie Hancock, Zucchero, Youssou N'Dour, and Angelique Kidjo, are among the artists booked to perform during the four-hour concert.
MTV will carry a live broadcast on MTV Italy, and Yahoo! will Webcast the event. MTV will provide terrestrial television distribution. A two-hour version will air on MTV in the United Kingdom on May 22 and across the United States on May 28. It will also be made available for broadcast to all 42 MTV channels around the world.
A live recording of the event will be made for future release on DVD and CD. Proceeds from the recordings, broadcast rights, the auction and related merchandise sales will benefit WAF programs, including the creation of child centers in six cities.
The first such center opened April 8 in Kigali, Rwanda. Other centers are due to open later this year in Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, and on the West Bank.
"We Are the Future" is executive produced by Quincy Jones, in association with the Rome-based production company Zone Attive and directed by award-winning director Julia Knowles.
