Berklee College of Music, the Boston-based music school, says its online file-sharing initiative has driven surges in site traffic and revenue for both its Berkleemusic.com online school and Berklee Press publishing division since its November launch.

In that time period, revenues for Berklee Press and Berkleemusic.com's books, DVD and instructor-led online courses have increased 32%, the college said today (May 18).

Berklee Shares offers free downloads -- in MP3, QuickTime and PDF form -- of online music lessons drawn from the Berklee curriculum, and covering instrument performance, music production and technology, songwriting and arranging, music business and improvisation. Site visitors have downloaded more than 350,000 lessons since November.

"The success of Berkleeshares.com is a testament to the need for music education on a global level," said Dave Kusek, VP of Berklee Media, in a release. "It is also proof that file-sharing can be embraced by musicians as a meaningful way to share information and knowledge with each other.

Berklee and Billboard are partners in the Berklee/Billboard Career Center, a growing database of music industry jobs and careers.
