For the first time, Universal Music Germany has forged a strategic partnership with Hamburg-based book publisher Hoffmann & Campe to develop a range of classical music and jazz CDs. The new range comprises almost 500 normal-price, mid-price and budget titles.

All bookstores in Germany that are serviced by Hoffmann & Campe will have the opportunity to order and sell CDs. At the moment, in the rollout phase, there are 2,000 outlets involved.

Universal Classics & Jazz managing director Christian Kellersmann says the concept was developed following an analysis of music retailers in Germany. "If you take a map and look at the places where potential customers must travel more than 50km to find a store with a range of classical music and jazz, enormous gaps become evident." The project was designed to "rectify this situation," he says.

Hoffmann & Campe is a division of Hamburg-based magazine publishing group Ganske Verlagsgruppe. Its portfolio includes titles for BMW Group and Deutsche Bank.
