The Beastie Boys' "To the 5 Boroughs" (Capitol) is the new No. 1 on European Top 100 Albums. Its debuts at No. 2 in the United Kingdom and No. 3 in Germany are sufficient to wrest the top overall spot from Avril Lavigne's "Under My Skin" (Arista), which falls to No. 2. Six years ago, the Beastie Boys' last studio set "Hello Nasty" was an instant U.K. No. 1 with opening sales of 58,000; "Boroughs" scores an opening tally there of 43,000.
A relatively inactive top 10 on the pan-European album survey shows English band Keane's debut release "Hopes and Fears" (Universal Island) climbing 10-8, after regaining the No. 1 spot in Britain. "Noiz" by Sohne Mannheims (Sohne Mannheims/Universal) is the highest overall new entry at No. 9 after opening at No. 1 in Germany and No. 2 in Austria.
Celine Dion's "A New Day -- Live in Las Vegas" (Columbia) debuts at No. 18 on Top 100 Albums, its best start No. 9 in France, although its No. 22 bow in the United Kingdom is markedly lower than the No. 3 she achieved with last year's "One Heart" and the 2002 No. 1 "A New Day Has Come."
On Eurochart Hot 100 Singles, there's a second week at No. 1 for O-Zone's "Dragostea Din Tei" (Media Services/Time/Vale), which holds at the top in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France and moves 2-1 in Spain and 10-2 in Norway. The rival recording by Haiducci (on Italian indie Universo) slips 4-5 overall, although it's still No. 2 behind O-Zone's version in both Germany and Austria and climbs 18-4 in Norway and 18-9 in Spain.
Britney Spears' "Everytime" (Jive) climbs 12-3 on the Eurochart, helped by its ascension to the chart peak in the United Kingdom, where it sells 54,000 copies. The song is Spears' second straight U.K. chart-topper and fifth overall. It's also new at No. 1 in Ireland and sits in the top five in Germany, Denmark, Norway, Austria and Hungary.
"Talk About Our Love" by Brandy featuring Kanye West (Atlantic) is the top new entry on the Eurochart at No. 18, fueled largely by its No. 6 start in the United Kingdom. It's Brandy's fifth top-10 single there over a seven-year period stretching back to 1998's "The Boy Is Mine" with Monica.
Strong sales inspired by Fathers' Day in the United Kingdom propel a number of compilations by veteran artists up the local album chart. Thin Lizzy's "Greatest Hits" (Universal Music TV) gives the erstwhile Irish rock band a second-week climb of 12-3 in Britain and 42-12 on Top 100 Albums, while Phil Collins' "The Platinum Collection" (Virgin) is up 19-4 in its third week on the U.K. survey, and 68-20 overall.
