Buena Vista Home Entertainment is sponsoring Clay Aiken's first headlining tour in conjunction with the Oct. 5 release of "Aladdin" on DVD. The deal is believed to be the first time a video distributor has signed on for a tour.
As part of the sponsorship, each of Aiken's 50 summer dates will open with a video piece featuring clips of Aiken singing "Proud of Your Boy," a song that was originally slated for inclusion in "Aladdin." The song was ultimately cut from the movie.
"Proud of Your Boy" was the last collaboration between Academy Award-winning songwriters Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. Aiken's rendition of the tune will be included as part of a music-video extra feature on the "Aladdin" DVD.
Through DisneyHand, a charity arm of The Walt Disney Company, a donation to the Bubel/Aiken Foundation was also made as part of the Buena Vista/Aiken sponsorship.
"Aladdin" will additionally be featured in all Aiken tour marketing materials including ads, signs and flyers.
The two-disc "Aladdin" DVD is part of Disney's platinum series, with each release containing new, digital transfers of classic Disney films, and a wealth of additional bonus features. Previous DVDs in the series include "The Lion King," "Beauty and the Beast" and "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves." This is the first time in 10 years that "Aladdin" will be available in video format.
Aiken's tour opens today (July 8) in Grand Fork, N.D. and wraps Oct. 18 in Raleigh, N.C.
